Channel Combination Strategies for Acoustic Communication with Towed Arrays
نویسنده
چکیده
Acoustic communication experiments were carried out during multistatic submarine searches in a littoral area. The purpose of the communication is to send information from the active transmitter to bistatic receivers. After transmission with a low-frequency source, phase-shift keyed signals were recorded on various hydrophone arrays towed by remote platforms. Message recovery is complicated by ambient noise, a time-varying Doppler shift due to platform motion, and by severe intersymbol interference due to multipath propagation. The present paper considers several techniques to combine the hydrophone channels of the receive arrays: a conventional beamformer followed by a single channel receiver, an equalizer combiner applied to the hydrophone channels, and an equalizer combiner applied to a collection of beams. The best performance is obtained with the beams combiner, which allows a data rate of 1000 bit/s in a reverberant coastal area.

Spread-spectrum Coherent Acoustic Communication between a Submarine and a Surface Ship
This paper describes an underwater acoustic communication experiment executed in the North Sea near Norway. A submarine broadcast direct-sequence spread-spectrum signals with data rates of 167 and 33 bit/s. The receiver station was a surface ship with a towed hydrophone array. As the platforms sailed away from each other the SNR at the receiver progressively dropped, with a continuously changin...
متن کاملTowed Array Technology: Development for a Better Sonar System Performance
In present missions of submarines, the detection of hostile targets is one of the main objectives. To achieve these objectives modern submarines are well equipped with sonar sensors and signal processing units for all acoustical frequency ranges. The detection and analysis of silent or distant targets is the main task of towed array systems. Towed arrays have their advantages in the low frequen...
متن کاملDiversity combining for long-range acoustic communication in deep water.
A recent experiment showed that coherent long-range acoustic communication is feasible in deep water over a ∼550 km range between a source towed slowly at ∼75 m depth and a horizontal line array towed at 3.5 knots at ∼200 m depth. This letter further demonstrates that diversity combining mitigates channel fading and increases the output signal-to-noise ratio. Using sparse channel-estimate-based...
متن کاملRange-dependent seabed characterization by inversion of acoustic data from a towed receiver array.
The MAPEX2000 experiments were conducted in the Mediterranean Sea in March, 2000 to determine seabed properties using a towed acoustic source and receiver array. Towed systems are advantageous because they are easy to deploy from a ship and the moving platform offers the possibility for estimating spatially variable (range-dependent) seabed properties. In this paper, seabed parameters are deter...
متن کاملTracking sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) dive profiles using a towed passive acoustic array.
A passive acoustic method is presented for tracking sperm whale dive profiles, using two or three hydrophones deployed as either a vertical or large-aperture towed array. The relative arrival times between the direct and surface-reflected acoustic paths are used to obtain the ranges and depths of animals with respect to the array, provided that the hydrophone depths are independently measured. ...
